'Snowbirds' Flock to Giant Campus Workshops: Seniors Enjoy Second Year of Tech Training at MacDill Air Force Base

SEATTLE - Jan. 9, 2008 - Giant Campus, the nationally recognized leader in technology education programs for youth and families, recently launched its second year of free CyberSenior workshops at MacDill Air Force Base (AFB).

The on-site program, which runs four hours every week, impacts the lives of countless "snowbird" military Retirees. These Retirees typically travel to Florida during the winter and live at MacDill's FamCamp, which is located on the base's picturesque waterfront setting.

"Our premise is to help seniors feel really comfortable with computers," said retired Navy Chief Warrant Officer 3 Bob Haunton, southern regional director of military programs for Giant Campus. "We're bringing them up-to-speed with much of today's technology, which many seniors feel has passed them by."

Many of FamCamp's residents already own nice computers, which are often gifts from their family members, Haunton said. But before the CyberSenior program was introduced, most residents didn't know how to incorporate that technology into their lives.

"Last year, we really saw a need among seniors for technology training, and that's when Giant Campus created this program, which is free of charge," Haunton said. "I was excited to show our seniors that as they get older, the computer can enhance their lives. There are so many things they can now do online from the comfort of their own homes."

The CyberSenior workshops educate participants on computer and e-mail basics, as well as how to use the Internet. In addition, seniors learn how to be safe when using their newfound technology skills, such as how to identify a secure Web site or use anti-virus software.

"The CyberSenior workshops reflect what Giant Campus is all about," said Pete Findley, chief executive officer of Giant Campus. "We're committed to helping everyone - from children in elementary school to seniors at our military installations - learn and employ skills needed for the 21st century."

Thanks to the program, seniors are now communicating with loved ones who live back home, or are deployed overseas. Participants also love being able to shop online, and keep track of their finances on a daily basis.

"Many of our seniors have family who are fighting in the war effort, and their loved ones want to keep in touch via the Internet and e-mail," Haunton said. "Some of our Retirees have even set up Web sites where they can post pictures for their loved ones to see thousands of miles away."

After seeing the success and popularity of its CyberSenior workshop at MacDill, Giant Campus is now also hosting a similar program at Nellis Air Force Base this year.
